What insurance is for, in one sentence
The product is not 'health' or 'cars.' The product is a contract that pays when a named loss hits, after you pay the deductible.
Pick coverage for losses that would wreck the month. Read premium, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum together. A cheap premium with a deductible you cannot pay is a loan waiting to happen.
Premium, deductible, maximum
The premium is what you pay to keep the policy, whether you use it or not. The deductible is what you pay on a covered claim before the insurer pays. The out-of-pocket maximum is a usual ceiling for covered in-network care, with exceptions written in the summary of benefits.
A higher deductible usually means a lower premium. That trade only works if the deductible can come from cash, not from a card.
Health, auto, renters, term life
Health plans differ on networks and referrals (HMO versus PPO is the usual classroom split). Under the ACA, a young adult can stay on a parent's plan until age 26. That is law, not a JagInsights rule.
Auto liability pays others for damage you cause. Collision pays your car after a crash. Comprehensive in the US is theft, weather, vandalism, animals: not the crash. Renters insurance covers your stuff and your liability, not the building. Term life pays a death benefit during a named term and has no cash-value savings account inside it.
What this page will not do
It will not tell you which plan to buy, how much life insurance to carry, or whether to raise a deductible. Those are personal. A licensed agent or the plan's summary of benefits is the next document, not a quiz.
Disability coverage replaces part of pay if you cannot work. It is a different product from health insurance. Many people meet it first as a payroll deduction they never read.
Questions people ask
Is the deductible the most I will pay?
No. The out-of-pocket maximum is the usual ceiling for covered in-network care, and even that has exceptions.
Is whole life the same as term?
No. Whole life is permanent and builds cash value. Term is a set number of years. Whole life costs more for the same death benefit.
Do I still need renters insurance in a 'safe' building?
The building's policy covers the building. Your stuff and a guest's injury are a different policy.
