How to read a first paycheck

The number in the offer is not the number you spend. Read the stub once, then build the budget on what actually landed.

Gross pay minus withholding and the benefits you chose is take-home pay. Rent, a 50/30/20 split, and an emergency fund all use take-home pay.

Gross versus net

Gross pay is the salary before anything comes out. Net pay, or take-home, is the deposit. A $50,000 salary is about $4,167 a month gross. Take-home is lower after federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare, state tax where it applies, and health premiums. The exact leftover depends on the W-4, the state, and the benefits you picked. This lesson does not quote a tax table.

How often you are paid changes the calendar, not the yearly total. Biweekly means 26 checks. Semimonthly means 24. Two months a year, a biweekly worker sees a third check. That check is still part of the same salary. It is not found money unless you planned it that way.

The lines on the stub

Federal income tax withholding comes from the W-4. FICA is Social Security and Medicare, set in law. The Social Security wage cap changes; the Social Security Administration publishes it. Pre-tax items such as a traditional 401(k) or a health premium lower the wages that get taxed now. Roth contributions lower take-home without that same cut to taxable wages.

Read the first few stubs. Payroll mistakes are cheaper to fix early than in April.

Benefits are a day-one deadline

New-hire enrollment windows are short. Miss them and you often wait for open enrollment or a qualifying life event. Premium, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum are the three numbers that decide whether a health plan fits the cash you have.

An employer 401(k) match is extra pay that only arrives if you contribute what the formula requires. The formula is in the plan document. Skipping the match is skipping a paycheck that only shows up inside the plan.

Questions people ask

Should I change my W-4 to get a bigger check?

A bigger check now can mean a bill later. The IRS has a withholding estimator. This page is not a filing.

Is a huge refund a win?

It is an interest-free loan to the Treasury. Some people like the forced savings. Others would rather have the cash each payday.

Traditional or Roth 401(k)?

Traditional lowers taxable wages now. Roth is taxed now. Neither is automatically better. Read the plan, then decide with a tax professional if the amount is large.
