What actually moves a credit score
Lenders use a three-digit number to decide whether to lend and what APR to charge. The habits that move most models are boring on purpose.
Pay every required payment on time. Keep card balances low relative to the limits. Do not open five cards in a week. Checking your own score through a soft inquiry does not work like a lender's hard pull.
It is a price, not a personality
Two people want the same used-car loan. One file prices at a lower APR than the other. The car did not change. The cost of the loan did. A score in the mid-700s is commonly offered better rates. A score in the 600s can still be approved, at a higher APR. Lenders set their own cutoffs.
FICO is one brand of score. VantageScore is another. A free number in a banking app may not be the model a mortgage lender pulls. The habits still rhyme.
Payment history and utilization
On-time required payments are the large factor in most models. A missed payment can stay on a report for years. The minimum payment keeps the account current. It does not, by itself, make the balance small.
Utilization is the balance divided by the credit limit. Models differ on what they treat as high. This lesson does not name a magic percent. Paying down a card can show up on the next report, often within a month or two.
Building a file from scratch
A secured card, or becoming an authorized user on a well-run family account, is a common start. Use it for a small bill you already pay, then pay the statement in full. Space new applications out. Each hard inquiry is a short-term ding.
Closing an old card can change the average age of accounts and the available limits. If the card has no annual fee and you can keep it at a zero balance, leaving it open is often the calmer move.
Questions people ask
Does checking my own score hurt it?
A soft check that you start usually does not. A lender's hard inquiry, when you apply, can.
Is the score on my banking app the real one?
It is a real score from some model. A lender may pull a different model from a different bureau. Treat it as a direction, not a verdict.
Will paying a collection raise the score overnight?
Paid collections and remaining balances are treated differently by different models. Pay what you owe. Do not expect a same-day jump this page can promise.
