What is subscription creep?
Subscription creep is the pile of small monthly charges that never get a decision. How to total them against take-home pay.
Subscription creep is what happens when small recurring charges accumulate without a fresh decision. Each one was reasonable on the day it started. Together they are a bill.
Worked example
Streaming $16, music $12, cloud storage $3, a gym $40, two apps at $8 and $10, a box at $25. That is $114 a month, $1,368 a year. On $3,200 take-home it is about 3.5 percent of pay, sitting in the wants column whether or not you use all of it.
Why it matters
These charges are designed to continue until you cancel them. A budget that does not list them is missing a real bill.
Questions people ask
Should I cancel everything?
No. List them, mark the ones you used in the last month, and cancel the ones you did not. The unused ones are the find.
Do annual plans count?
Yes. Divide the annual price by 12 and put that on the monthly list, or the month the charge hits will look like an emergency.
Is a phone installment a subscription?
It is a recurring charge until the phone is paid off. List it with the others so the total is honest.
